What is limescale?

Limescale is a mineral deposit that forms when calcium carbonate reacts with lime in hard water. It occurs naturally in all plumbing systems, including sinks, showers, toilets, tubs, pipes and faucets. Hard water contains high levels of dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. When these minerals react with the lime in tap water, they form deposits called limescale.
